Aoife Callan - Young Ambassador

Aoife is 25 years old and works as a fibre supervisor for Callan Connect, a Civil and Fibre Engineering company based in Aston, Birmingham specialising in the telecommunications industry. Since its inception in 2006, Callan Connect Ltd has grown from a team of 8 to well over 100 and been awarded contracts with blue chip clients such as BT Openreach and Virgin Media.

  • What does your job involve?
    What does your job involve?

    I work with our build programme managers by building permits to allow us to legally dig on the highways. This involves working closely with local authorities over the midlands to help us carry out our works as smoothly and safely as possible. I have a reactive role which involves having to ensure all permits are granted in place for the required dates with the correct information and conditions.

    What do you enjoy most about your role?

    I enjoy the variety of tasks in my role, no day is the same and I am always learning new legislation and rules around streetworks. Building relationships is a key part of my role, and working towards deadlines in a fast-paced environment keeps my job interesting.

    Word of mouth. I then got in touch and applied directly for the position. I have also since applied for another job internally and moved departments.

  • What qualifications do you need?
    What qualifications do you need?

    I did not have any specific qualifications related to my job ( I have a degree in Social Science), but communication skills and Microsoft skills will help a lot. My company is also helping to support me in obtaining my professional qualifications around my career path.

    We have internal training which involves shadowing senior colleagues. I also had an online training course provided by our contractor which covered all areas of my role.

    There are so many different roles and opportunities in the telecoms sector. As the industry is always growing and evolving, you are always learning and must be adaptable to change.
