James Faherty - Young Ambassador

James is 23 years old and works as an ibre Project Co-Ordinator at Callan Connect, a Civil and Fibre Engineering company based in Aston, Birmingham specialising in the telecommunications industry. Since its inception in 2006, Callan Connect Ltd has grown from a team of 8 to well over 100 and been awarded contracts with blue chip clients such as BT Openreach and Virgin Media.

  • What does your job involve?
    What does your job involve?

    My job role is Fibre Project Co-Ordinator. This involves me doing the relevant work on a day-to-day basis for the company to meet the set deadlines. This involves the tracking of each individual PN and then ensure everything is complete to the highest standard before submitting the PN to our client. I act as the connection between the client and the subcontractors to ensure everything can run as smoothly as possible.

    What do you enjoy most about your role?

    Multitasking and working closely with sub-contractors and having the connection with them as well as the client as it allows me to see how the physical build is progressing out on site as well as the documentation side in the office. When planning the works in order of deadlines it allows me to have an organized day which helps towards meeting the set dateand targets for that specific job.

    I heard about this job through word of mouth while working out on site. I first started here as a Fibre supervisor on site before becoming a Project Co-Ordinator moving into the office.

  • What qualifications do you need?
    What qualifications do you need?

    There are many difficult qualifications within this industry depending on what your specific job is. While working as a supervisor / overhead engineer I completed many courses for me to work on the network. Some of these courses are:

    • Overhead safety

    • Underground safety

    • PIA installation and ducting

    • PIA pole stepping on congested poles.

    • PIA overhead cable installation

    • IPAF (1b static boom)

    • Signing, lighting, and guarding (street works)

    I have also done my supervisor version of street works.

    The company provide any courses needed to work on the network. I had a lot of accreditations already and have done my supervisors course – I’m now looking at PRINCE 2.

    What would you say to anyone considering the sector?

    I first started working in this sector at the age of 20 and have worked 3 different jobs in that time. I think this alone shows that there are plenty of different jobs within this sector for everyone. So, for anyone looking to getting into this sector I would recommend the choice.
