Doug Williams

Dr Doug Williams has worked for BT Applied Research for over 30 years.  For the last 20 years he has focused on developing and running collaborative projects that focus on enabling media experiences that use the affordances of IP delivery. Doug has led three major H2020 projects since 2002 with a total project value in excess of €35million.  These projects explored reconfigurable narrative, multi camera viewpoint video conferencing, the mixing of games with communication and personalised TV using Object Based media.  Doug is pleased to be leading 5G Edge-XR and to be exploring how GPU based edge compute and 5G technologies can enable immersive experiences that address Sport (of immediate relevance to BT) and applications across a range of other industries.

Doug sees that his latter career as helping to fill the capacity enabled through the optical networks that were the focus of his early career, where he designed fabricated and assessed special optical fibres.
