Vodafone, together with Samsung and AMD, announced the successful demonstration of their first end-to-end data call using AMD’s new general-purpose processor on an Open RAN platform.

In addition to proving that the technology works well, it also reinforces Vodafone’s aim to introduce new silicon partners to the Open RAN eco-system, driving both innovation and more competition. A stronger Open RAN ecosystem gives network operators greater choice of software and hardware whilst strengthening the vendor supply chain.

Eutelsat OneWeb, part of Eutelsat Group, the world’s first integrated GEO-LEO satellite operator, and Intelsat, a leading provider of in-flight connectivity (IFC), have completed a series of historic demonstrations of inflight connectivity across the polar regions within the Arctic Circle.

Professional services outfit Ernst & Young (EY) is to open an edge technologies lab (EY Edge Technologies Lab) in London with US-based Dell Technologies to demonstrate and develop edge-based “ecosystem technologies” to help enterprises with digital transformation. The venue will focus on industry-specific use cases and prototypes, said EY. A statement talked generally about the “value of data” and “real-time insights”, but was quick to mention generative AI, among all the different edge-based systems and applications to support fancy data-driven enterprise analytics.

New funding and support has been unveiled today to back British scientists working on world-leading chip development which could help to power advancements in AI and will underpin the technologies needed to reach net zero. 

To coincide with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s one-year anniversary – two new research hubs in Southampton and Bristol have received a cash injection to boost research in silicon photonics and compound semiconductors. 

Kyndryl has expanded its partnership with Google Cloud to develop ‘responsible’ generative AI solutions and to accelerate adoption among customers.

Kyndryl and Google Cloud have worked together since 2021 to help global businesses with AI capabilities and trusted infrastructure.

The next phase of the partnership will focus on coupling Google Cloud’s in-house AI capabilities, including Gemini, Google’s Large Language Model (LLM), with Kyndryl’s managed services to develop and deploy generative AI for customers.

Vodafone and e& have partnered to provide other operators with managed voice solutions.

The collaboration will support operator’s international voice traffic requirements and growth plans, as well as help meet the growing demand for voice over 4G/5G (VoLTE) services.

“Managing cross-border voice is increasingly complex due to new regulations, providing protection against international scams, and the need to migrate to 5G services,” said Ninian Wilson, CEO of Vodafone Procurement and Connectivity.

BT Group, Ericsson and Qualcomm have demonstrated end-to-end consumer and enterprise 5G differentiated connectivity enabled by network slicing.

The trial was completed on Ericsson’s 5G Core and Radio Access Network (RAN) technology in the UK with devices powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen for Galaxy Mobile Platform.

Greg McCall, chief networks officer at BT Group said: “Network slicing will enable us to deliver new and improved capabilities for customers in the 5G SA era.
