Non-terrestrial networking applications are on the rise. In recent years, alongside technical advancements in antennas, chipset size, power consumption, reusable rockets and satellite size, there has been a renewed interest in the use of LEO networks with large satellite constellations to provide voice and data services, particularly to rural or remote areas. With more demand for higher bandwidth and lower latency, Non-Geostationary Orbit (NGSO) satellites have also started to emerge and help serve different use cases: mainly broadband communications, connectivity to enable the Internet of Things industrial applications, provision of backhaul for terrestrial networks, and advanced earth observation applications.
To build on the UK’s already formidable strengths in this domain and identify important emerging challenges and opportunities, the UK Telecoms Innovation Network (UKTIN) has brought together a group of voluntary experts to explore themes around satellite systems (GEO, MEO and LEO), medium to high-altitude systems (including HAPS and UAS), integration and convergence, and user equipment across the telecoms landscape.
On Monday, 22nd April 2024 the UKTIN Non-Terrestrial Networking Expert Working Group is hosting an open roundtable discussion to share its latest research and invite feedback and suggestions to ensure its work is addressing the most pressing challenges and opportunities to push the UK forward.
The roundtable will take place at the Digital Catapult near London Kings Cross, from 1pm - 4pm, for specialists and thought leaders to workshop and inform the Group’s findings ahead of research publication.
