An academic department of the University of Warwick, and a centre for the HVM Catapult, WMG was founded by Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya in 1980 to help reinvigorate UK manufacturing and improve competitiveness through innovation and skills development.
Intelligent Vehicles Research Team
The concept of autonomous or 'driverless' vehicles promises many benefits for future transport but also brings significant challenges. First steps towards autonomy are in the market, with product features, such as automatic parking and emergency braking systems, as well as many automotive OEMs producing working prototypes of fully autonomous vehicles. However, there are considerable challenges to be overcome before fully autonomous vehicles move from concept to commercialisation. The Intelligent Vehicles research group works with industrial partners to address research challenges with industrial relevance. Working across four themes (Connectivity and Communications Technology, Cooperative Autonomy, Verification and Validation; and Human Factors), the team lead a number of major programmes and facilities that act as enablers for academic research with industrial relevance, and also address the CAV skills gap through education programmes.
WMG Centre High Value Manufacturing Catapult
The HVM Catapult is focused on advanced manufacturing, with seven centres across the UK, each with their own specialisms, offering access to world-class equipment, expertise and collaborative opportunities. The HVM Catapults work with manufacturing businesses of all sizes and from all sectors to help accelerate the activity between technology concept and commercialisation. The WMG centre HVM Catapult focuses on providing solutions for Low Carbon Mobility, delivering value to UK manufacturing by de-risking innovation in the following areas: Lightweighting, Advanced Propulsion Systems, Energy Storage and Managemen; and Intelligent Vehicles.
Working with transport sector partners in automotive, commercial, off-road (agricultural and construction), rail and marine, the WMG centre HVM Catapult enables and accelerates the development of new technologies, products and processes.
