CHEDDAR

The Communications Hub for Empowering Distributed Cloud Computing Applications and Research (CHEDDAR) is a new hub dedicated to advancing future communications. Funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) – UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) via the Technology Missions Fund (TMF), CHEDDAR, alongside TITAN and HASC, represents pioneering platforms established to foster advancements in communication systems, and will serve to bridge connections across academia, business, and the global community.

HASC (Hub on all-spectrum connectivity)

This Hub will bring together seven partner institutions from across the UK in a 3 year programme of work, with the key goal to realise the vision of ‘all-spectrum connectivity’.

TITAN

TITAN's pioneering research in telecommunications promises transformative implications for both UK and global societies and economies. Our work drives social inclusion by improving coverage and accessibility while fostering economic growth with sustainability at its core. As a leader in telecommunications innovation, TITAN strengthens the UK’s global economic position and plays a vital role in building a more connected, secure, and prosperous world. Our ultimate mission is to design a seamless, open, and fully integrated Network of Networks (NoN), laying the groundwork for the evolution of 6G networks and beyond.

JOINER

Our project is led by the University of Bristol, alongside three core partners who represent each of the Future Telecoms Hubs — CHEDDAR, HASC, and TITAN. Along with JOINER, these three projects create the Federated Telecoms Hubs. JOINER connects the research labs of each of these partners, and extends to include seven other centres of excellence — or nodes. Drawing together research leaders and test networks from across the UK, each bringing their own unique specialisations and capabilities.

Our interconnected telecoms industry will only thrive with standards at its core

Perhaps I’m showing my age here, but I’ve been involved with technology standards for the best part of the last 40 years. For the bulk of that time, I worked on the latest networking technologies, strategy, and architecture at BT, engaging with the likes of ETSI, IETF, IEEE, and 3GPP. Notably, I was a member of the team that pioneered adoption of cloud technology for network functions virtualisations.

Ian Smith announced as Head of UKTIN

We are delighted to announce Ian Smith has joined us as the Head of UKTIN. Smith brings over 30 years in telecoms, with hands-on experience designing, building and operating fixed and mobile networks, and a wealth of commercial expertise. Smith previously worked as the Chief Technology Officer at Quickline Communications, and Programme Director for the 5G Testbeds and Trials programme for UK government.
