Earlier this year 40 women from across industry, policy makers and academia met to discuss how to support UK women in the telecoms sector. The event, organised by DSIT, Ofcom, UKTIN and techUK aimed to foster collaboration between existing gender diversity initiatives and discuss what more could be usefully done.

UK joins EU’s €11 billion chips scheme

The UK's semiconductor research efforts will receive a boost after the government joined the EU's Chips Joint Undertaking (JU).

The Chips JU has a total budget of around €11 billion, with €4.175 billion contributed from various EU pots and the rest forked over by participating states and the private sector. It has five operational objectives, covering the design and production of new chips; quantum chip development; training; and facilitating access to debt and equity financing.

Cheers and jeers as US grapples with spectrum logjam

Various efforts in the US from both sides of the political aisle to free up more mobile spectrum have gone down well in some quarters, but not so well in others.

Global telecoms kit market slides as carriers stop spending

New figures from Dell'Oro show a 5% year-on-year slide in the around US$100 billion market, a worse performance than it had expected, driven amongst other things by a slowdown in 5G and home broadband investments, as well as macroeconomic trends and the remains of a post-Covid hangover.

The news comes as something of a surprise, the analyst firm having reported 2% market growth in the first half of the year, albeit with Q2 coming in flat. Further, the slide follows five consecutive years of growth, the analyst firm said.

Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) has announced a regulatory sandbox designed to support trials for direct to device satellite connectivity.

Anatel’s board of directors have implemented the sandbox in light of Brazilian mobile providers Claro and TIM’s plans to conduct trials with AST Space Mobile.

Brazil’s challenging geography means millions of people are left without cell coverage from terrestrial networks.
