BARCELONA – #MWC24 – Vodafone’s Open RAN network-in-a-box, which was unveiled just ahead of last year’s MWC event, is in the final stages of commercial preparation and will become available in June, according to Yago Tenorio (pictured above), Vodafone fellow and network architecture director at the operator. 

While end-of-year results are still coming in, 2023 revenue for OpenRAN products appears to have declined, following an impressive increase between 2019 and 2022, according to a recently published report by Dell’Oro Group.

Three gathered journalists to the Glasgow City Chambers on a brisk February morning to unveil the project, which was described as a trial to improve urban connectivity by deploying a series of small cells on lampposts around the city, as an alternative to new macro sites.

Vodafone, together with Samsung and AMD, announced the successful demonstration of their first end-to-end data call using AMD’s new general-purpose processor on an Open RAN platform.

BT Group, Ericsson and Qualcomm have demonstrated end-to-end consumer and enterprise 5G differentiated connectivity enabled by network slicing.

The trial was completed on Ericsson’s 5G Core and Radio Access Network (RAN) technology in the UK with devices powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen for Galaxy Mobile Platform.
