Orange buys into Eutelsat's LEO capabilities

Orange has announced a new deal with Eutelsat that will enable it to add LEO connectivity into its portfolio of satellite-based communications services.

The French telecoms group is spending on low earth orbit (LEO) connectivity at a time when the technology is really starting to find its feet, but at this stage it appears that it is not doing anything particularly groundbreaking with it.

This deal is all about Orange providing better services to its government and enterprise customers, or as it puts it, "high throughput, low latency, resilient and sovereign services," as well as boosting mobile backhaul. It will combine satellite coverage from Eutelsat's OneWeb with its own terrestrial networks to create seamless continuity of service and greater security for business customers, even in the more remote areas of the globe, it said.
