Telecoms Trailblazers: A Day in the Life of Robert Searcy

Hi, I’m Robert Searcy, a Sales Director at Vitruvi Software. We are an international construction management platform that provides intuitive tools to manage utility projects. The company is focused on utilities, with a particular emphasis on telecommunications networks. I have been working in this role for three years, and most of my clients are altnets, the alternative network providers in the UK, rolling out FTTP (Fibre To The Premises).

Network API revenue forecast to exceed $8 billion by 2030

A forecast by Juniper Research predicts a significant increase in network API revenue from the $284 million operators are projected to generate in 2025.

The network Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) business model put simply, means operators generate revenue by providing access to their networks to developers and third parties, which in turn enables external applications to interact with telecoms networks.

Global smartphone market dips slightly in Q2 as vendors respond to tariffs and stagnant demand

According to the latest research from Canalys (now part of Omdia), global shipments of smartphones fell marginally to 288.9 million units in Q2 2025, as modest consumer demand restricted market growth. Samsung was the largest vendor in Q2, shipping 57.5 million smartphones, up 7% year on year. Its performance was largely driven by its mass market-focused Galaxy A series. Apple finished second on the vendor ranking table, with iPhone shipments down 2% at 44.8 million units.

World’s submarine comms cables under greater threat than ever

  • Deliberate sabotage by “malign actors” is increasing under the cloak of “plausible deniability”
  • The immense amounts of vital data carried by submarine cable systems cannot be replaced or even ameliorated by satellites or microwaves
  • Lack of a coherent global strategy to counteract sabotage has resulted in a seadog’s dinner of uncoordinated, patchy and partial responses
  • Absence of concerted international action will eventually result in bigger, economically and socially paralysing outages and unrest

ITU-T SG15 Meeting, Paris

What is the ITU and what does ITU-T SG15 do?

ITU-T SG15 is the primary standards bodies for optical networking including access systems, core systems, and submarine systems, as well as all the necessary optical components including optical fibre. In addition, it sets standards for timing and synchronisation which are closely related. I set out a much more detailed introduction to the ITU-T and its Study Group 15 in our blog post from its previous plenary meeting.
