Hello, I’m Professor Muhammad Ali Imran and I lead the Communication, Sensing and Imaging (CSI) Hub at the University of Glasgow’s Department of Engineering. I’m particularly interested in energy-efficient cellular systems and frugal networking solutions.

EE has launched 25 new sites on Freshwave’s mobile infrastructure in the City of London, enhancing its 4G and 5G network.

FRANC was the first intervention DSIT announced from the Open Networks Programme in 2021. A total of 14 projects were funded to support the goals of the Government’s 5G Supply Chain Diversification Strategy by helping to incentivise the industry to create new products and services to unlock the full potential of Open RAN. 

EE has now deployed over 1,000 small cells across the UK, marking 400 new deployments over the last 12 months including its first 5G sites, recently installed in Croydon, London.

Three gathered journalists to the Glasgow City Chambers on a brisk February morning to unveil the project, which was described as a trial to improve urban connectivity by deploying a series of small cells on lampposts around the city, as an alternative to new macro sites.
