Virgin Media O2 pledges £700 million for mobile this year

UK operator group Virgin Media O2 says it will spend £700 million on upgrading and extending its mobile network this year alone.

VMO2 explained it will spend the cash on new masts, small cells and 4G and 5G upgrades, as well as rolling out new spectrum and increasing automation in its networks.

It's all about improving customer experience, you see. The timing of the announcement is probably no coincidence, given that major rivals Vodafone and Three are working towards merging their businesses sometime before the end of June, which will leave VMO2 chasing the pack in the UK if it doesn't up its game.
