Europe lags in advanced 5G capabilities - Ookla

A new study by Ookla claims the 5G “coverage gap” between major economic blocs is increasingly shrinking, but a significant "capability gap" is widening instead and Europe stands out.

The capability gap between major economies, the report says, highlights the different stages of market readiness, including the ability to exploit the network as a platform for innovation, industrial applications, and advanced services. While some countries and regions have progressed beyond the initial core upgrades to full network overhauls, others, such as Europe, lag behind.

“Much of Europe remains a laggard, held back by sluggish commercialization and device and tariff-side fragmentation that weighs on network access," says the report. "Bright spots such as Spain, however, show that favorable outcomes are possible where governments mobilize to stimulate progress."
