Port of Tyne, BT, and Ericsson boast that they’ve clocked new operational gains from a private 5G network powering real-time video analytics, sensors, and connected equipment across the site.

The private network uses BT spectrum and Ericsson’s on-site core and radio infrastructure, and pipes in connectivity for real-time applications across the 620 acre site, supporting operations across over 3km dock space for mooring vessels.

The port uses connected vehicles, machinery, and video-driven processes, and we’re told traditional wireless technologies were not able to offer the reliability or scale required in the port environment, since “cabling is costly and operational layouts change several times per year.”
