Quantum key distribution (QKD) is headed for the stars thanks to a new consortium launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) and Spanish satellite operator Hispasat.

The group, called Q-Design, has set its sights on enabling QKD via geostationary and low Earth orbit satellites (GEO/LEO) as well as terrestrial infrastructure.

If all goes according to plan, the project will support QKD services that can work on any one or a combination of these network environments, giving it the flexibility to adapt to coverage conditions as required.

No fewer than 15 companies are involved, ranging from research institutes; satellite manufacturers and operators; plus a telco and a towerco.
