European telcos want €30 billion price break on spectrum

European mobile operators are looking to get the cost of renewing their spectrum licences renewed reduced by €30 billion over the next decade.

Industry body the GSMA on Tuesday published a new report whose main aim is to persuade European regulators and policy makers that if they let operators pay less for spectrum, the savings made will be ploughed into networks.

More specifically, operators would be able to spend on 5G standalone, they insist, tapping into governments' fears around the continent lagging behind on that score.
