The UK government has found £121 million at the back of the sofa to throw at quantum research, which it says will “bolster the UK’s world-leading research programmes.”
The UK quantum sector is home to the second largest community of quantum companies behind the US, we’re told, and this new pot of cash will help deliver economic growth, apparently.
Spinning up quantum computing systems will bring a range of benefits to working people, says the release, such as improved healthcare systems, better energy efficiency in the grid, and helping to tackle crime, fraud and money laundering.
The funding coincides with World Quantum Day, and will be made available over the next year which in order to “further secure the UK’s position as a world-leader in quantum as part of the government’s long-term commitment to the sector.”
