Virgin Media O2 (VMO2)'s mobile network is on course for an upgrade thanks to a bunch of frequencies it has agreed to acquire from newly-merged VodafoneThree.

In return for a £343 million outlay, VMO2 will receive 78.8 MHz of spectrum spanning multiple bands:

  • 20 MHz of 1400 MHz Supplemental downlink (SDL)
  • 18.8 MHz of 2100 MHz Frequency division duplex (FDD)
  • 20 MHz of 2600 MHz Time division duplex (TDD)
  • 20 MHz of 3400 MHz TDD

The top three in this list promise a significant improvement to O2's 4G network capacity, while the 3400-MHz TDD spectrum will boost its 5G performance.

That's particularly important, given O2 ranked last in Opensignal's most recent report on UK 5G availability, which came out last September.
