UK mobile data usage up 18% in 2025

Ofcom’s annual Connected Nations report finds that Brits used 18% more mobile data in 2025 than the previous year, which totals 1.2 billion GB each month.

If you have trouble envisioning the amount of data, we’re told that’s the equivalent of streaming 400 million football matches in HD, watching 315 billion TikToks, or sending 1.3 quadrillion text-only WhatsApp messages. The report appears to be taking July this year as a snapshot for the metrics.

Ericsson and Orange team up for an assortment of 5G trials

Orange France and Ericsson are collaborating on several trials covering things like Massive MIMO radios, 5G energy-saving features powered by automation and AI, and cloud and Open RAN deployments.

The firms are conducting what they call a focused program of experimental trials, with the broad ambitions of enhancing spectral efficiency, accelerating network automation, and promoting sustainability across mobile networks.

UK green lights 'loyalty lawsuit' against UK telcos

The Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) has ruled that a class action seeking up to £3.3 billion of compensation from EE, O2, Three and Vodafone can proceed.

Filed back in 2023 by self described consumer champion Justin Gutmann, the lawsuit accuses these telcos of levying unfair charges on millions of postpaid customers.

The service is currently available for use in France and 36 countries to date*.

Telefónica, Nokia and the UPV prove the 6 GHz band for mobile communications through a pilot project

  • The tests confirm the importance of the 6 GHz band, considered the last opportunity for spectrum in mid-bands to deliver the mobile services of the future, offering high capacity and coverage comparable to the one offered by the 3.5 GHz band thanks to innovations such as Nokia's active antenna solutions.
  • The pilot was carried out at the Campus of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) and required the adaptation of the 5G holographic laboratory, a European benchmark in research into advanced connectivity technologies.
  • The initiative reinforces Spain's leadership i

NTT Docomo 6G trial uses AI at both ends

NTT Docomo has conducted what it says is the world’s first outdoor demonstration using real-time transceiver systems with AI-powered wireless tech, pitched as a 6G play.

The trial was performed alongside Nokia Bell Labs and SK Telecom at three locations in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan, and the firm says it confirmed that the use of AI improved throughput by up to 100% as compared with “conventional non-AI-based methods under the same environmental conditions, effectively doubling the communication speed.”

Goodbye Project Kuiper, hello Amazon Leo

Amazon’s satellite operation Project Kuiper has had its name changed to Amazon Leo, ‘a simple nod’ to the Low Earth Orbit satellites that make up its burgeoning network.

The now scrapped Project Kuiper name was apparently inspired by the Kuiper Belt, a ring of asteroids in the outer solar system. This was apparently a code name, and the new permanent brand for the program instead refers to the type of satellites it is currently building its constellation with.
