The number of 5G connections worldwide is growing at a rate of knots and as such is projected to hit 9 billion by 2030.
That's a substantial uplift on the 2.6 billion-plus connections recorded at the end of June this year, according to the latest data published by 5G Americas and provided by Omdia. And that figure itself represents significant growth of 37% year-on-year.
Nonetheless, the 2030 figure will still only represent 60% of all wireless connections in the world, so there will still be growth to capture in the next decade. And traffic is only going one way too.
Overall global cellular data consumption increased by 15% on-year in Q2, reaching 384 million terabytes. The industry body did not say as much, but the growth of 5G is doubtless one of the drivers for traffic growth.
