STL downgrades API revenue forecast

Research and consulting company STL Partners has revised down its outlook for mobile network API revenue – but it is still a lot higher than some other forecasts on the sector’s potential.

STL says mobile network APIs could unlock global revenues of $31 billion for the telecom industry by 2030 – however due to some initial launch delays that is down 8% from the $34 billion in revenue it expected in last year’s forecast.

However it maintains that the long-term opportunity remains strong. Identity APIs remain the largest driver of revenues, which it projects to grow from just under $3 billion in 2025 to $12 billion by 2030. This is expected to come from a growth in operator share of the existing anti-fraud market, which is currently handled by communications platform-as-a-service (CPaaS) players, we’re told.
