Just as bats rely on echolocation to hone in on moths, Vodafone wants to apply the same principle to mobile networks.
That's how the UK-based telco is pitching its new experiment with integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). The technology effectively adds radar capabilities to mobile networks, making them spatially aware of what's traversing a cell site without compromising personal privacy.
ISAC is being billed as the centrepiece feature of 6G; however, it is listed among the features of 3GPP Release 19, which was frozen late last year and is actually an upgrade to the 5G Advanced standard. It's just that the technology is not expected to be ready for commercial deployment until after the 6G era dawns.
