Nokia says AI is driving a ‘fundamental rethink’ of data centres

Nokia has been testing Ultra Ethernet Transport (UET) traffic across its data centre platforms, and says “AI is changing the game when it comes to expected performance.”

Nokia, alongside Keysight Technologies, completed some end-to-end testing of UET traffic across its high-performance data centre switching platforms. The test ran on kit such as the Nokia 7220 Interconnect Router (IXR) and 7250 IXR, and Nokia says it demonstrates compatibility with integrating Ultra Ethernet Consortium (UEC) Specification 1.0 capabilities into its HPC/AI-ready networking portfolio.

5G connections to hit 9 billion by 2030

The number of 5G connections worldwide is growing at a rate of knots and as such is projected to hit 9 billion by 2030.

That's a substantial uplift on the 2.6 billion-plus connections recorded at the end of June this year, according to the latest data published by 5G Americas and provided by Omdia. And that figure itself represents significant growth of 37% year-on-year.

Nonetheless, the 2030 figure will still only represent 60% of all wireless connections in the world, so there will still be growth to capture in the next decade. And traffic is only going one way too.

UK invests another £10 million in semiconductor sector

The UK government is handing out another few million pounds in hopes of striking semiconductor gold.

According to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), the UK's chip sector is set to grow by 75% between now and 2030.

To help it along, it has – via Innovate UK – made available £10 million worth of funding to boost the development of advanced chips that could one day find their way into smartphones, wearables, cars, aircraft, and defence systems.

As many as 40 businesses stand to benefit.
