Xiaomi overtakes Apple in wearables as demand ticks up

Xiaomi shipped the most wearable band devices in the first quarter of this year, overtaking Apple, as the broader market witnessed an increase in demand, new analyst data shows.

The number of bands, ranging from basic bands to smartwatches, shipped globally during the three months to the end of March came in at 46.6 million, an increase of 13% on the same period last year, according to research from Canalys.

Three UK doubles Glasgow city centre speeds with UK-first Open RAN rollout

Three UK has successfully completed the first stage of a landmark trial – the UK’s first deployment of Open RAN technology in a dense urban environment. The trial was designed to test the viability of deploying Open RAN in a complex city setting. Glasgow city centre was selected to assess how the technology performs in busy, high-traffic areas, where integration with existing infrastructure and multiple technologies presents additional complexity.

Vodafone and MediaTek claim 5G upload milestone

Vodafone and chip firm MediaTek say they have reached a milestone by successfully testing 5G uplink speeds of up to 277 Mbps.

Vodafone and MediaTek used the former’s 5G Standalone (5G SA) network at its test facility near Madrid, Spain, with MediaTek’s M90 modem for the trial. MediaTek’s processor delivers download speeds of up to 12Gbps and boosts uplink performance by up to 20% based on the latest 5G specification - Release 17 – developed by industry body 3GPP, so says the release.

Microsoft promises speedier scientific research with agentic AI

Microsoft has announced a new enterprise agentic platform called Microsoft Discovery, which purports to accelerate research times by giving scientists and engineers specialised AI agents to collaborate with.

Microsoft Discovery, launched at the Microsoft Build 2025 event taking place this week, is built on top of the tech giant’s Azure cloud platform and in short provides researchers access to specialised AI agents based on a “graph-based knowledge engine.”
